CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Praise the Lord! O give thanks to the Lord, for God is good; People: For God’s steadfast love endures forever. Leader: Who can utter the mighty doings of the Lord, or declare all God’s praise? People: Blessed are those who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times. All: Let us worship God! *HYMN Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty Praise ye the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation! All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near;Join me in glad adoration! Praise ye the Lord, who o'er all things so wondrously reigneth,Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!Hast thou not seen how thy desires e’er have beenGranted in what He ordaineth? Praise ye the Lord! O let all that is in me adore Him!All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him.Let the amen sound from His people again,Gladly for aye we adore Him. PRAYER OF CONFESSION O God, we need your forgiveness. For the failure to do what we know is right; for the failure to love and to forgive and to serve others as we know we ought to do; for the failure to be what we can be, and to do what we can do, forgive us, O God. Help us to live the new life you have prepared for us in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, in whose name we pray. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel, People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Amen. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Send your Spirit among us, O God, as we meditate on your love. Prepare our minds to hear your Word, move our hearts to embrace what we hear, and strengthen our will to follow your way. This we pray through Christ, our Savior. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Micah 6:6-8 NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Matthew 22:34-40 SERMON The Great Commandment AFFIRMATION OF FAITH From the Confession of 1967 God’s sovereign love is a mystery beyond the reach of the human mind. Human thought ascribes to God superlatives of power, wisdom, and goodness. But God reveals divine love in Jesus Christ by showing power in the form of a servant, wisdom in the folly of the cross, and goodness in receiving sinful men and women. The power of God’s love in Christ to transform the world discloses that the Redeemer is the Lord and Creator who made all things to serve the purpose of God’s love. Amen. PASTORAL PRAYER and the LORD’S PRAYER HYMN Today We All Are Called to Be Today we are all called to be disciples of the Lord,To help to set the captives free, make plow-share out of sword,To feed the hungry, quench their thirst, make love and peace our fast,To serve the poor and homeless first, our ease and comfort last.God made the world and at its birth ordained our human raceTo live as stewards of the earth, responding to God's grace. But we are vain and sadly proud, we sow not peace but strife,Our discord spreads a deadly cloud that threatens all of life.Pray justice may come rolling down as in a mighty stream,With righteousness in field and town to cleanse us and redeem. For God is longing to restore an earth where conflicts cease,A world that was created for a harmony of peace.May we in service to our God act out the living word,And walk the road the saints have trod till all have seen and heard. As stewards of the earth may we give thanks in one accordTo God who calls us all to be disciples of the Lord.
