CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, People: They will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; Leader: Planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God. All: Let us worship God! *HYMN Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above Sing praise to God who reigns above, the God of all creation, the God of power, the God of love, the God of our salvation. With healing balm my soul is filled and every faithless murmur stilled:To God all praise and glory! What God’s almighty power hath made, God’s gracious mercy keepeth; By morning glow or evening shade, God’s watchful eye ne’er sleepeth; Within the kingdom of God’s might, Lo! All is just and all is right To God all praise and glory! The Lord is never far away, but through all grief distressing,an ever present help and stay, our peace and joy and blessing. As with a mother's tender hand, God gently leads the chosen band:To God all praise and glory! Thus all my toilsome way along, I sing aloud thy praises, that all may hear the grateful song my voice unwearied raises.Be joyful in the Lord, my heart, both soul and body bear your part:To God all praise and glory! PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of love, you have always given us what we need. You have taken care of us even when we could not care for ourselves. You have given us life and breath. Still, there are times we doubt you. There are times we seek to go our own way, rebelling against you, forgetting your goodness and grace. O God, we have hurt ourselves and others by trying to be so fiercely independent. Forgive our sin, our arrogance and our pride. Grant us courage enough to place our trust in you. We pray in Jesus’ name and for his sake. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel, People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Amen. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Calm us now, O Lord, into a quietness that heals and listens. Open wounded hearts to the balm of your Word. Speak to us in clear tones so that we might feel our spirits leap for joy and skip with hope as your resurrection witnesses. Amen. CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to a king’s son. People: May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice. Leader: May he live while the sun endures, and as long as the moon, throughout all generations. People: In his days may righteousness flourish and peace abound, until the moon is no more. All: Let us worship God! *HYMN Crown Him With Many Crowns Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne. Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing of Him who died for thee, And hail Him as thy matchless king through all eternity. Crown Him the Lord of love, behold His hands and side, Rich wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified. No angel in the sky can fully bear that sight, But downward bends his burning eye at mysteries so bright. Crown Him the Lord of peace, Whose power a scepter sways From pole to pole, that wars may cease, absorbed in prayer and praise. His reign shall know no end, and round His pierced feet Fair flowers of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet. Crown Him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time, Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime. All hail, Redeemer, hail! For Thou has died for me; Thy praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Righteous God, you have crowned Jesus Christ as Lord of all. We confess that we have not always bowed before him, and are slow to acknowledge his rule. We give allegiance to the powers of this world, and fail to allow ourselves to always be governed by your justice and love. In your mercy, O God, forgive us. Raise us to acclaim Jesus as Lord of all, and King of kings, so that we may be faithful servants who follow Jesus as he calls us to do. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel, People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Amen. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION O Lord, your Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Give us grace to receive your truth in faith and love, and strength to follow on the path you set before us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Psalm 100 NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Matthew 25:31-36 SERMON When I Was Hungry … AFFIRMATION OF FAITH From a Brief Statement of Faith We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal. Amen. PASTORAL PRAYER and the LORD’S PRAYER HYMN Now Thank We All Our God Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices,Who wondrous things has done, in whom this world rejoices;Who from our mothers’ arms, hath blessed us on our wayWith countless gifts of love, and still is ours today. Oh, may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us;And keep us in God’s grace, and guide us when perplexed; And free us from all ills, in this world and the next. All praise and thanks to God, who reigns in highest heaven, To Father and to Son, and Spirit now be given. The one eternal God, Whom heaven and earth adore; The God who was, and is, and shall be evermore. BENEDICTION POSTLUDE Now Thank We All Our God
