Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty God, by water and your Holy Spirit you baptized us to be your own, and called the church into being. We confess that we hold back the love of your Spirit among us. We do not listen for your word of grace, speak the good news of your love, or live as a people made one in Christ. Have mercy on us, O God. Transform our lives by the power of your Spirit, and make strong our common witness to the one Lord, our Savior, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel, People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Amen. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Prepare our hearts, O God, to accept you Word. Silence in us any voices but your own, so that we may hear your Word and also do it; through Christ our Lord. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Psalm 149 NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Matthew 18:15-20 SERMON On Shunning and Excommunicating *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PASTORAL PRAYER and the LORD’S PRAYER *HYMN There’s a Wideness In God’s Mercy There's a wideness in God's mercy, like the wideness of the sea; There's a kindness in God’s justice which is more than liberty. There is no place where earth's sorrows are more felt than up in heaven:There is no place where earth's failings have such kindly judgement given. For the love of God is broader than the measures of the mind; And the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind.If our love were but more faithful, we would gladly trust God’s Word; And our lives reflect thanksgiving for the goodness of the Lord. BENEDICTION POSTLUDE The Call to Worship today is taken from “Ministry Matters”.

Humbly we confess our coldness of heart; our lack of zeal for your kingdom; our lack of love for you and others of your children. Ever blessed God, we recognize that we have not done justly, nor loved mercy, nor walked humbly with you. Forgive us, O God, and create in us new hearts. We pray in Jesus’ name and for his sake. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Psalm 130 NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Matthew 18:21-35 SERMON On Forgiveness *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH From the Confession of 1967 God the Holy Spirit fulfills the work of reconciliation in human life. The Holy Spirit creates and renews the church as the community in which people are reconciled to God and to one another. The Spirit enables people to receive forgiveness as they forgive one another and to enjoy the peace of God as they make peace among themselves. In spite of their sin, the Spirit gives people power to become representatives of Jesus Christ and his gospel of reconciliation to all. Amen. PASTORAL PRAYER and the LORD’S PRAYER *HYMN O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing Oh for a thousand tongues to sing my dear Redeemer’s praise; The glories of my God and King, the triumphs of God’s grace Jesus, the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease;’Tis music in the sinner’s ears, ’Tis life and health and peace. Christ breaks the power of reigning sin, and sets the prisoner free;Christ’s blood can make the sinful clean, Christ’s blood availed for me.My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim,To spread through all the earth abroad the honors of Thy name.
